Google Analytics 4: the first things you should configure

Installing Google Analytics 4 is the first step, not the last. By default, it collects generic information that rarely reflects what you actually want to know about your business. Here's what's worth reviewing first.

Define your conversion events

A conversion event is the action that genuinely matters to you: a form submitted, a purchase, a call started from the website. Without marking them as conversions inside GA4, there's no way to know whether your site and campaigns are working beyond raw visit numbers.

Check the property's basic settings

Correct time zone and currency (a more common mistake than it sounds, and one that skews every report) and the data stream properly linked to your domain, including subdomains if you have them.

With this connected, you can see in one place which paid campaigns and which organic searches generate traffic that genuinely converts, not just traffic that "arrives" but does nothing.

Set up audiences for remarketing

Creating audiences based on behaviour (people who viewed a product page without buying, people who spent a certain amount of time on the site) lets you reuse that data directly in Google Ads campaigns.

Under current privacy regulations, data collection has to respect user consent. Incorrect configuration can make you lose valid data, or collect it without the proper legal basis.

The difference between a badly configured GA4 and a well-configured one doesn't show on day one: it shows three months in, when you need to decide something based on data and discover the reports don't reflect what's actually happening.

Check the reports regularly, not just when something's wrong

Many businesses install GA4, configure it well at the start, and then never look at it again except when something goes wrong. It's worth spending a few minutes a month reviewing where converting traffic comes from, which pages generate the most drop-off, and whether the conversions you defined still reflect what you actually care about measuring today, which isn't always the same as a year ago.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for GA4 to give reliable data after setup?

The first data starts arriving immediately, but it's worth waiting at least two or three weeks before drawing conclusions, so there's enough volume to reflect real behaviour rather than just the initial curiosity spike.

Does GA4 completely replace Search Console?

No, they're complementary. GA4 measures behaviour once the user is already on your site; Search Console measures how they find you in search before arriving. Linking both is what gives you the full picture.

Do I need to know how to code to set up conversion events properly?

Not always. For simple actions like form submissions or button clicks, GA4 lets you configure them without code from its interface. Only more specific cases require touching code or using Google Tag Manager.
