AI chatbots: what they can and can't do yet

Chatbots from a few years ago ran on rigid decision trees: type X, get response Y, and not much else. With generative AI, the conversation genuinely feels natural. But "feels natural" doesn't mean "has no limits," and it's worth knowing them before putting one on your website.

What they're genuinely good at

  • Answering FAQs in natural language, understanding different ways of asking the same thing.
  • Qualifying leads: asking initial questions to understand what someone needs before handing them to a person.
  • Providing 24-hour first-line support, cutting the wait for simple queries.
  • Checking real-time information (opening hours, availability, prices) if properly connected to your systems.

What they still shouldn't do alone

Decisions with legal or medical implications still need human oversight. Without good configuration, they can "invent" convincing but incorrect answers (what's known as hallucination. And in situations with a very upset customer, human empathy remains irreplaceable: a bad chatbot there can make things worse.

The key is limiting its territory well

A well-configured chatbot doesn't try to answer everything: it has a clear scope) your business, your products, your policies — and knows when to hand the conversation over to a person instead of improvising outside that territory.

The sensible way to start: a narrow scope (FAQs, booking appointments), measure how it responds in real situations, and expand its capabilities gradually, as it proves itself reliable.

Does it replace a customer support person?

Not entirely, and it shouldn't be framed that way. A well-configured chatbot absorbs the volume of repetitive, simple queries, freeing up the human team's time for what genuinely needs judgement, empathy or negotiation. Combining both usually works better than fully replacing one with the other.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to implement an AI chatbot?

It varies a lot depending on complexity and required integrations, from affordable solutions for small businesses to custom builds for more complex cases.

Can a chatbot learn from past conversations?

It can improve over time if its responses are reviewed and its configuration adjusted, but it doesn't "learn on its own" without oversight: someone needs to periodically check what it's getting wrong.

Is it safe to give it access to customer data?

It depends on how it's configured and implemented. It's important to limit what data it can access and make sure it complies with GDPR, just like any other system handling personal data.
